The seizure is part of Operation Fast and Furious, an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) into firearms trafficking across the US-Mexico border. During Fast and Furious, ATF allowed suspected drug traffickers to buy weapons from licensed dealers in Arizona hoping to track their movements and dismantle their operations. However, instead of leading to arrests or prosecutions of gun smuggling suspects, Fast and Furious has resulted in the deaths of several law enforcement officers and Agents.
In a press conference on July 10th, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin stated that “the reckless behavior that led to these casualties will not be tolerated.” He also announced plans to terminate Operation Fast and Furious within 120 days if not terminated by then by President Obama himself.
This seizure is just one example of the devastating consequences of Operation Fast and Furious.
